Marketing and Social Media Mourn Joe Paterno
It has been made clear that the sport of football was what kept the late Penn State Head Coach Joe Paterno waking up every morning. With the on going rumors, good old Joe Pa’s once strong and unmatchable reputation had turned sour rather quickly. Looking on Facebook, Twitter and search engine marketing websites, Joe Paterno’s name could be seen all over the place.
On Twitter, Kerry Collins, former Quarterback at Penn State, fifth overall draft pick in 1995 draft and played four seasons for Paterno stated: “It was truly an honor and a privilege to have played for him He was a great man who led a great life.”
Since Paterno’s passing, every day it seems there is another former figure giving Joe Pa recognition on an outstanding career unmatched by his record in wins. Many former and current NFL players such as LaVar Arrington, Paul Posluzny, Larry Johnson, and Dan Connor have all been involved in the social media talks about the late great future Hall of Famer, Joe Pa. On ESPN’s Sports Center, leading reporters such as Stuart Scott, Trey Wingo and others have all been mentioning Paterno in a great light even since the alleged sex abuse scandal involving other former coaches.
Other prominent football figures also talked on Paterno’s legacy, Coach Mike Ditka stated on Sports Center that “This [Paterno] was a man of class, poise; he was a man of character.” BCS defending head coach Nick Saban also commented on Paterno saying “I really think that Joe Paterno probably gave his life to football and not just college football, he gave his life to the players.”
Joe Pa’s legacy has been scarred from the recent sex abuse rumors that surround the once proud university of Penn State. His demise unfortunately came at a time when explanations and reasoning are needed, leaving questions and concerns about the investigation. One thing is for certain; Joe Paterno enjoyed football, and loved Penn State. He spent 46 years as the head coach winning a total of 409 games, which made Paterno the most winning head coach in college football. His legacy, while filled with question marks at the end, remains as one of the most prominent careers that the entire sport of football has ever seen.
